Reskinning My Ship

Reskinning My Ship

While I normally don’t mind working with placeholder artwork I stumbled across http://www.gamedevmarket.net the other day and decided I should pick out this modular space ship sprite set to get things working a littler faster. I added a grid to let me test out the ships movement a little better and I have a really bad star field being generated that needs a lot more work. But the ship parts are looking good and I am trying to readjust all the calculations for the smaller 16X16 pixel size. Thinking these super small textures will help make the game run better on slower hardware down the...
New Ship Experiment

New Ship Experiment

I am a huge fan of Golden Ruby‘s games and Hermit Crab in Space (http://goldenrubygames.com/games/hermit-crab-in-space) has always been in the back of my mind since I first played it. So last night I started testing out what it would be like to build a modular space ship engine inside of unity. Here is my first test ship. It’s not much to look at right now but the ship is made up of separate “parts” that can be fitted together (by hand right now) to make a fully flying ship. Also Each of the parts can be configured to use a key so when you press that key, all the parts with the same key value will fire. Having a lot of fun with this one and glad to finally be doing something that’s isn’t just a port of one of my older HTML5 games. We’ll see how far I get with this...
Exploding Body Parts With Lighting

Exploding Body Parts With Lighting

Now that I have full lighting effects working in FlappyJetroid I figured why not add little spot lights to the body parts that shoot out when the player dies? The game is finally coming together and looking really good… you know for a simple Flappy Bird clone. And again in the scenes so you can see how the lighting is setup. Each body part has it’s own little spot light attached to it. This this happens at the end of the game and there isn’t a lot going on the frame rate should hold up...
Lighting Effects For FlappyJetroid

Lighting Effects For FlappyJetroid

Figured I would add some lighting to effects to my game. Easy enough and also giving me a chance to play around with how materials work in Unity outside of the Sprites I’ve been relying on for my 2D games. This was achieved withs a point light and a spot light on the player. Here is the effect in the Scene...
Dynamic Repositioning In Unity

Dynamic Repositioning In Unity

I now have the core of my Flappy Bird clone done in Unity. Here you can see all the elements are not only repositioned and resized based on the camera and the resolution but even the background is dynamically resized. Here is what the game looks like in the Scene editor when it’s not running. Now I just need to clean this code up enough to make it easy enough to reproduce in a...
